but just in case someone runs across this error, it is documented somewhere.

Can you post some log files? This is interesting. Are you talking about a dual monitor setup? Wish I had the hardware to test this. It would be more useful to have a reason why because simply documenting the error is not a fix.

I looked in the log file, and it had nothing of value, interestingly enough...

I don't have a dual monitor setup, but it is definitely an error of the graphics card, and its' setup.

My guess is that simply at 24 bpp, the overlay just doesn't work (for whatever reason)... I am working on the matrox people to see if there is something I am doing wrong, or if it is just a symptom of that card. I'll see if I can scare up an error log for shiggles.

Have you checked XFree86/xorg log?
Code:
#tail /var/log/Xorg.0.log

If tail doesn't show enough then try
Code:
#cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log|less

and look for errors (EE) near the bottom of the log file.

How about running windowed instead of fullscreen? Same problem?

No errors in my EE file, but I will try windowed in a bit and see what's up.

Also, when I run in GL mode, it locks up, and the log file has this error:
Could not initialize video display: Couldn't find matching GLX visual
Video initialization failed! Oh, but you use opengl 2.0, right? I don't think this card goes past 1.2...

I am still working with a matrox group to see whats going on with my driver and getting it running perfectly... but I think this error is for any of the drivers I might try. My accelerated drivers are a bit funky, I think... I will keep you updated, and will check what you asked for...

I should have known the X log wouldn't show anything.

Good luck! and keep us informed.

I ran the program again today at 24bpp with different drivers, and everything worked.... so, I don't know what to say... its' just one of those things I guess... figured I would document it for anyone who might run into these things.

I use a program called DVDAuthor, and I had a constant problem with it for months, the author and I would go back and forth building and rebuilding the software... turns out he never figured people would use 16bpp, and the program caused the error because of that.... something that is basically not the issue gummed it all up. He fixed it, and I switched anyway to 24bpp.

Now with my "new" graphic card, I have problems running opengl apps in anything but 16bpp... weird, huh...

Oh well, figured I would keep you informed...
