Hey all!
Just wondering what the average age of posters is on here. I'm sure that this has been gone over like a hundred times, but that was then and this is now...

I'm Pariah.
I'm 33, and played all the best games in all the best arcades way back in the day!!
I'm a Tech Specialist by day at a local Middle School, and I teach Algebra, English, and Creative writing at a local College at night. I sleep seldom, and care less. Heh. I dig ALL arcade games, but especially LDGs (most especially DL and SA which is good, since those are the only two that I can afford to buy so I can rip em!). I've been married for nine years, this September 17th (Three days after my birthday to help me remember it!!) and have no children... Personally I find them repugnant (you try working at a Junior High and not end up hating kids!!). I play Airsoft, which is basically Paintball without the paint, and drive a big ol' stupid Ford Bronco.
I write in my spare time, and hope to publish my first book some time this winter. I dig my two cats, Memnoch and Azazel (I think that for as evil as all cats are, by nature, they should definitly be named after the devil).
I program (a little C++, but mostly VB {though not very well}) and am into digital art and junk and stuff and things....

Anyway...

Who are you? Let me know! Lets get a little more personal here. I'm sick of talking to faceless people that I don't know!! I would much prefer faceless people that I do know..

That was a joke.... yeah...

Hey Pariah, this is actually a pretty cool idea you've stumbled upon... I realized that as I read your mini-bio that I have no idea what most of the people who visit this site do for a living, or what their hobbies are, and I would be interested in learning more about the people who visit this site.
Creative writing eh? I like to write as well, I haven't done much of it lately, but a few years ago a friend and I began writing a rather large story which quickly got to over 200 pages. Unfortunately, I realized about this point that I didn't really care about any of our flat characters and that their goal, and indeed, the story itself... pretty much was very boring. I seem to do my best writing when I am doing parodies of serious topics, or just writing about familiar people.

---

Well... people probably know something about me already. I am 27, and I just finished school (finally, I started taking classes at that blasted place a whopping 10 years ago!). I work as a professional programmer, mostly doing web development for now, but I'd really like to be making video games instead. Speaking of video games, I have been playing Warcraft 3 for over 1 year now and show no signs of stopping, that game has so many different things you can do in it that I continually discover things to keep me interested. In addition to being a big fan of whatever game Blizzard decides to put out, I am also a big fan of id Software both because their games are fun to play at a competitive level, and because I like their policy about releasing their code to the public after the game has stopped selling. I used to be very good at Quake 2, and won a local tournament which netted me a brand new Voodoo3 video card (new at the time hehe).
I like to read as well, mostly fantasy-type books. I am enjoy the Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time, and surprisingly enough, the Song of Fire and Ice (but I'd never admit to it if you asked me hehe). I also used to read a lot of David Eddings as well as Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman, but I haven't paid much attention to them much recently.
As for music, I like Dream Theater and Queensryche the most. I recently drove from Salt Lake City to Denver just to hear both these bands in concert.
I also like to sing and play the piano and I have some inherent talent in both these areas. I am able to sit down at the piano and play most any song that I hear on the radio. I have much more difficulty trying to do this with classical music, certain movie scores, and Dream Theater songs (which are usually very technically sophisticated, one reason I like them!).
Oh ya, and of course I was a big Dragon's Lair fan. I first saw the game when I was 7 years old. Little did I know that one day I'd own one, nor did I suspect that I would write an emulator for it.

Awsome, Matt! That is exactly what I was hoping for.

A great man once said, "If you're going to write, you damn well better write about something you know! I'm sick of reading things from people who don't know sh*t!" -- guess who

That's actually something I forgot. Up until about 2 months ago I was still taking classes too. My dad once said to me, "You're dead the minute you stop learning." I would have to agree.

DUDE... id ROCKS! I still play Doom, Doom II and Hexen almost religiously. I grow a big rubbery one for ol' skool games, 'specially when they are that bloody cool!

Haven't read those yet, though all my friends have and keep bugging me to do so. I'm more into horror (Ala' Stephen King) Crime Drama, and non-fic.

As for music

Totally forgot music!! Oh man. I really dig Gwar! I know that sounds crazy, but they just make me laugh. I saw them in concert at the Orbit Room in Grand Rapids Michigan (I live in Muskegon, about 50 miles away) and it was one of the best nights of my life. I like some other stuff too, but if I tell you what they are you won't believe me.... Suffice to say that my musical tastes are somewhat... eclectic.

I, on the other hand, bear no music talent whatsoever. I played in the band in Junior high and high school, but to this day have never learned to read a note of it. I (at the time) could sort of play by ear, but I was never any good really.

And we're all fiercely glad you did, Matt!

Hey guys :D

My name is Henrique (yup, my nickname is also my real name! :o )

I live in Brazil and I'm 20 years old. I didn't play dragon's lair on 1983 (i had just been born) but I did play a lot of it a few years later. Only found out about daphne recently and since then, I've been playing my dvd-rom version of DL on daphne non-stop. :P Besides DL, I also love playing FPSs (used to play a lot of quake 2 too, matt) and rpg style games. I'm currently studying Eletrotechnic Engeneering (that's how i'd translate "Engenharia Eletrotécnica" from portuguese) ("engenharia eletrotécnica" is the engeneering of electricity at high voltages. ex: electricity transmission) for 1,5 years now. I love reading sci-fi books and one of my favourite authors is Isaac Asimov. Also, I love playing pen and paper RPGs (currently playing a dungeons & dragons campaing).

edit: Dunno how could I forget this but I also love watching movies and Stanley Kubrick is the ultimate director! :P Oh, and as for music, I'm a huge fan of RUSH and also like pink floyd.

I guess that's all, see you guys around.

I'll testify to Matt's Quake II abilities, though his LAN experence against me was somewhat of a trial =P.

Anyways, you guys should appreciate his dedication. Years ago this site/interest was merely a hobby of his, those of us who knew him years ago have tailed his progress and are proud.

Fear not in telling your own story to Mr. Ownby, he's annoyingly receptive and non-judgemental. (Just call him 'weasel' and 'rube' a lot. Ask him about that stuff too)

Just be glad a guy like him is a leader in your community!

Mixed in with these veiled compliments is a whole lot of gravy training :)

Six88, you big rube.. I keep visiting your IRC channel and you are never around. What is the meaning of this outrage?

I'd prefer to keep my name off the forum, but I'll tell you what I can.

I work as a scientist, and played Dragon's Lair when I was 8. I like to think that it made me what I am, because it was something that intrigued me - I played Pacman, then that, and tried to work out what made Dragon's Lair look so much better.

Eventually, a friendly floorwalker told me that there was a "special disc inside" that stored the cartoons.

A few years later, I got a job maintaining MSX information kiosks, that ran from Laserdiscs, I learned everything I could, and was intrigued. I thought that a job where I could keep learning would be ideal.

So I got one, and now I still try to look into hardware whenever I can.

At the time of this writing, I am 30 years of age, and Dragon's Lair was very important to me -- 1983 was the most turbulent year of my childhood (parents divorce, moving to a new city, the usual stuff) and I would escape into the arcades, and DL was the only game I was ever any good at (memorization and timing? Hey I can do that!)

As for who I am now, that is a very long story indeed, too long for this place. The short answer is that I've been a cake decorator, a theater usher, a cook, a bartender, a hotel manager, a computer technician, a webmaster, a software developer, a technical writer, a playwrite, an actor, a grip, a gaffer, and a goof off. I was married for six years to a woman who completely lost her mind and tried to kill me (no, I'm not kidding), and have pretty much re-invented myself in the three years since the divorce. These days I live with two women in a beach house south of Los Angeles, and for reasons that would take too long to explain, I frequently find myself in the company of the cast and crew of the late "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

My current occupation is technical writer, my current ambition is to finish my novel in the next six months, a paranormal thriller about the dangers of cloning, and my current hair color is (bleach) blond.

No, I'm not trying to be colorful, this is just who I am.

Hey guys. Im pretty new to the Daphne scene. I just started my quest
to get the 2 greatest emulators(by my standards) Daphne and Mame into 1 cab. I read what you all do for a living and cant quite compare. I'm just a Dad :P . Not much choice in that matter, but I love being a dad. My life has been kinda hard since i had a kid when i was still a kid. Being that my life was ruff when i was younger, going to the arcade was a great thing for me and did it as often as i could. I loved the laserdisc games best of all :) . Ok so i love all video games! I was known to everyone in my family as a kid as the "vidiot" cause i couldnt get my eyes off the screen. My brothers dad worked for digital computers and i got to learn alot about what was going on at that time( 1983 or so ) from him. He even bought us an atari 800xl! what a guy!

I'm 28 as of the time of writing this. I play and write music( i dont write sheet music though) mostly guitar. I got to play some fps games at a friends house back in 1998 (mostly quake related) and loved em. Currently im still playing tribes2 wich i enjoy much. Missed tribescon5 but made it to tc4. Nothing is more gratifying to me though than to play the classics like DL! I found this emulator and bought the digital leisure dvds imediately!

As for music, i listen to everything from country to rap. Not top 40 crap though. Mostly old school speed metal :P .

Id like to take this space to personally thank everyone involved in developing Daphne! You guys rock!

I have alot of time on my hands so i just kinda research stuff on the net.
Its amazing the kinda things you can learn! Can anyone say informational freedom at last!

Anyway, Thanx again to the Daphne development team. You have brought a piece of my childhood back and have made my sons childhood even better! He's alredy addicted to DL! You guys are great. Also i have been checking out some of the posters personal cabs and have learned alot from you guys so, Thanx for that as well! Using a hardrive as a spinner! I woulda never thought of that! mwuahahahaha!

Starting to feel old now..

Pariah, you were.. what... 12 when Dragon's Lair hit the Arcade?

Morsybreyth, you were 7ish???

henrique.. :-)

Hmmmm.. ;)

I was an arcade pro (well, I thought so.. :-) ) by the trime DL came out.

Being 16 when it was released..

Grew up in Los Angeles, but generally headed to "The Valley" for the best arcades.. (That and because I didn't like getting rolled for my arcade money, which would happen in the city. I was short for my age..)

As a result, I played video games, read, and used my computer (Vic-20 was my first computer). We actually had a computer class with NO computer in my HS. The teacher was from the private sector. Once a month or so, he'd bring his Osborne 1 from work and we could type in our programs to see if they worked. Talk about motivation for writing good code!!! :-)

So, I decided to be an English major in college. (That computer stuff was just for fun..) Luckily, I realized I'd be a terrible teacher and got a job working phone systems/payphones. Then network cabling. Then networking.... etc...

Now I'm a LAN/WAN admin for the State or Oregon..

Yes, I have an arcade machine.. It's a converted Tempest (I didn't ruin a Tempest.. it was converted when I got it!!) and I have a PC in it playing Vantage (MAME-esqe emulator for slower PCs). When I upgrade a bit, I plan on setting it up to play AdvanceMAME (it's a real arcade monitor) and Daphne.

Favorite games at the time: TRON, Tempest, and Dragon's Lair.
Games I was best at: Ms. Pacman, Donkey Kong, Popeye.

Games I'm best at now: Almost none, but I still have fun. :-)

Song I always got my best scores to: Tom Sawyer - RUSH

Music I like: Everything, cept real country.

Books: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Greek & Roman plays. :-)

OK... to keep this going...

I'm 37, I remember Dragon's Lair well in the arcades (I was 17), but I only ever played it a few times because it was too expensive and I couldn't afford to get good at it (I've always been more of a pinball player, but I do like both). My younger brother played DL and beat it, way back when.

I currently have two arcade machines at home: Xenophobe and Gorf. I bought the Xenophobe working, but the Gorf took three sources of parts to get going: the boards from a local electronics scrap dealer (when I was in high school), a good cabinet with broken glass and a dead monitor from a local arcade operator (when I was in college), and finally, a Gorf cabinet that had been converted to Galaxians and painted over, but with good glass, from a local arcade auction.

I've always fiddled with electronics, even as a kid. Building a DL/SA scoreboard from scratch was tedious, but not hard. I do a little woodworking on the side, so someday, I plan to put a real LD player, a slow PC mobo, and a TV set in a home-built cabinet. Hmm... I'm sure I could put some indication of booting progress on the scoreboard...

When I'm not playing classic video games, I enjoy Quake for FPS, and RTS games like Starcraft, as well as turn-based strategy games like Civilization, and especially text adventures (Zork, et al). I'm also going back through the excellent Amiga game "Black Crypt" - the sound still blows me away.

I'm mostly a UNIX admin and C/Perl programmer, but right now, I'm working for a University Physics department as a researcher at the South Pole.

Wow, that is very, er, cool!

And I always thought 'PenguinCentral' was a Linux site! :)

Thanks for making Daphne's global coverage complete.

Well... I am running Linux down here, but, no, it's just my personal site.

I didn't bring a LD player with me (but there's a nice Pioneer DVL-V888 for Karaoke on station), and I didn't bring any of my game discs with me (one original DL, one original SA, and a remastered DL), but I do have MPEGs with me. At some point here, after it gets dark, I'm planning on setting up a Daphne machine. At home, I always used a real LD player (since I have several), and prefer it, so we'll see how the experience goes with file playback.
