Post subject:  Successful moves sound in DL?

Why is it that quite often the sound of "successful move" can be heard, only to be followed by instant death? This is me playing DLE 2.0...

The meaning of the successful move sound has changed in DLE - it now means 'move accepted' - i.e. you've got the timing right, but the actual move wrong.

This was changed so that players weren't left wondering whether their direction or their timing was wrong.

This is not correct. The original arcade DL never had a "successful move sound".

To date, the joystick feedback sounds for all versions of DLE behave in exactly the same way as Cinematronics' original DL ROMs. The dink sound means that the move has been accepted, with no bearing on whether or not the move was correct, and the buzz sound means that the move was not accepted. So for this reason, wesp5's original question is flawed, as there is no dedicated sound for a correct move.

For SA, Cinematronics changed the dink sound to be a correct move sound only, and they used the buzz sound for both: incorrect moves & moves not accepted. An idea worth investigating, I suppose, but it doesn't seem like they tested it out long enough (or cared) to realize that it leaves ambiguity as to whether a wrong move was accepted, or whether the move was not accepted and your time just ran out afterward... or, worse yet, were you even able to hear the buzz overtop the music? Should you try the same move again next time? ...it's all anybody's guess. SAE restores the DL feedback method, which has no abiguity whatsoever, because when you hear the dink, you can know for sure that your move was accepted, and then you can plainly see whether or not Dirk survives it, and when you hear the buzz, you can know for sure that the move was not accepted. So, among DL, SA, DLE & SAE, the original SA ROMs are the only ones that differ.

DL2E has a new method, with a new sound. The buzz is for unaccepted moves, the dink is for correct moves, and a new third sound is for incorrect moves.
