In the original arcade game wasnt there an onscreen indication of when to move or when to use the sword? I seem to remember seeing something 'flash' so that you knew which way to go.

My game starts at the castle, zooming in then the brawbridge. Dirk falls through the drawbridge and some wierd thing attacks him in the mote. I cant figure out when he is supposed to hit the 'sword' button.

Is there something Im missing?

Press SWORD when the tentacles get close, then UP after you swing, and finally RIGHT after you climb up.

Dragon's Lair 1 is pretty hit and miss for the flash clues. They probably decided to put them in after much of the game was animated. Space Ace was better about them, and DL2 has the clues at just about, if not every move.
