I have finally got my mitts on a Dragon's Lair II LaserDisc but am having a few teething problems. I'm sure you guys will be able to point me in the right direction.

When I load it up in Daphne it seems to initialise correctly, lets me put some credit in the machine and starts when I press player one. However, as soon as the game starts to actually play it goes all wrong. The first two moves (Left, Left) are automatically carried out, then the only move that gets correctly recognised is the Left to jump on the horse (If I don't make the move I die). After that I cannot get any further, the Sword move is never recognised and I always die. Can anyone think what could be wrong?

I know the LaserDisc player and PC hookup are fine as I can play Space Ace and the orginal Dragon's Lair all the way through with no problems. I'm fresh out of ideas now =(

Cheers

Sounds like it might be getting out of sync. How fast is the computer you are using? I'm not sure by how much, but DL2 hardware will need more horsepower than DL1 hardware.

Could be that, it's an old earlyish pentium laptop. The trouble is with my new laptop I don't have a COM port available and my desktop is located upstairs =(

Is there any way of making a new laptop work with a LD player? Maybe a USB port pretending to be a COM port?

Cheers

To answer my own question, there are USB to COM convertors and I've picked one up on EBay (UK). When that arrives I'll give it a spin on the new laptop.

In case anyone else is interested this is the item I purchased:

Good luck with the converter. I don't remember hearing if they work or not, but I don't see why they wouldn't. Please share your experience when you get it.

If you are using a sony LDP another option for your old laptop would be Rob DiNapoli's DL2 conversion. It's a hack of the DL2 rom to run on a PC. It runs a lot more efficiently than Daphne for DL2 since it's running the code natively without all the overhead of emulation.

Hi,

I'm a newbie but have a similar problem. I think it is a sync problem. Try left when the sword flashes. If this works then similar to me you are running two/three moves late!

ie The first two left flashes complete automatically as the game hasn't got there yet. Your first left to get on the horse is actually seen as the very first left (by the table). If my theory is right then when the sword flashes in the video, a left move will be accepted, as you are actually completing the left out of the door move etc. etc

How to adjust it, I'm sure its simple. I'm trying altering the framefile values as we speak? Perhaps somebody with more knowledge can help?

Got the convertor today so shall have a play tonight.

I see what you are saying about the lag but I can't adjust the framefile as there isn't one! I'm playing the LaserDisc directly.

Ok, I've had a play using the USB to RS232 convertor. Original Dragon's Lair and Space Ace both play fine.

However, I get exactly the same problem as before when I attempt to run Dragon's Lair II. It is definately out of sync, because if I press left again when I should be pressing sword I can continue and left again keeps me going.

I've tried it on 2 seperate players, A Pioneer LD-V8000 and a Sony LDP-3600D, both produce the same results.

Here is the log file when using it with the Sony (It's a bit worrying when it detects the PC as 700Mhz when it's a 2.00GHz Laptop):

Is there around a 3.19 version of this conversion?
I'm missing the overlay hints on the first level, which I remember clearly when I played the game 15 years ago. Maybe I'm missing something more? (I never finished the game)

I seriously doubt the overlay hints in 3.19 are what you are remembering from 15 years ago. 3.19 was never released to the arcades. 3.15 was the last version automatically distributed to operators, and was the most commonly found rom.

Wait... I've just remembered that I live in Italy! :)
I might have played the Elettronolo (?) version?
I remember those hints very well.

No more ideas on what the problem could be?
