Yep the Philips player is dead RIP.

But I have two VP406 players and I would like to know if they would work with Daphne

Here's a url I found with some pics.

http://www.fivechannels.com/hardware/la ... _vp406.htm

They both play the disc with sound etc.. but can Daphne control it. It does have an RS232 port on the back.

The FAQ has a database of all of the laserdisc players that work with DAPHNE.

If the player isn't listed then no one has ever tried it or added support for it. There is a possiblity that it will function in Daphne but it all depends on what command set the player uses. If the Philips uses a supported Daphne command set it should work fine, but if it is propritary to Philips players then you will need to find the programming manual and write a driver for it. The best way to find out what command set it uses is from the programming manual, but you could also use the trial and error method, trying different command sets in Daphne and see if any work for your player.

Also remember different players use different cables... either null modem or straight through.

The player uses a null modem cable (found information on another web site). I have tried all of the other command sets but the player just keeps on playing on its own.

Sorry, it sounds like it uses its own custom command set then. You could try contacting Philips to see if they would sell you a copy of the programming manual if you'd like to try to add support.

Philips VP406 uses the same command protocol of Philips VP380, used in european DL2 machines. I have a copy of the manual.

Someone who has the player would be the ideal candidate to write the driver. And writing the driver is not hard, especially since we have 3 drivers already written which someone could use as a model.
