I thought Daphne was impressive running on Windows. The Linux port blew me away! It runs very smooth indeed...

I'm stuck trying to figure out why the sound device is not being opened. I'm running Knoppix 3.3 (had to apt-get install libstdc++3 for Daph to work), and I know the sound driver is working because I can hear other programs making sound.

Initializing sound system ...
WARNING: Audio device could not be opened, DAPHNE will run without sound

What device is it trying to open?

Don't forget that you'll also need to install SDL. I'm not sure if that's your problem though. There are better linux gurus than I on this board, especially where daphne is concerned.

But yeah, Daphne runs much better on Linux than on Windows. I wish more people could see it in it's full glory.

You're using Knoppix?! Hmm... I bet a lot of people would love to have a KnoppixDaphne boot disc. Please keep us (or at least me!) posted on your progress.

I'm not sure (because I haven't looked) but I believe someone asked about this problem before and I did a little investigating for them to find the answer. Try searching the archives...

Hi There

Matt, That may have been me ... :-)

under Linux, Daphne looks for snd-pcm-oss (I think).......
It also needs SDL and maybe SDL_mixer installed if your SDL doesnt already contain it.
Try running from konsole, Daphne should show you the items it is trying to start...
My problem was under Mandrake 9.2rc2, I have now installed 9.2 final and no longer have the sound problem.
Are you using onboard sound ?
If using KDE, try disabling 'start aRts soundserver on kde startup'
Its in the Control Center under System Sounds (I think, not at home on my linux box at moment)
Once youve got this sorted, try DaphneLoader under wine

Hello,

I'm experiencing the same Daphne audio problem:

Initializing sound system ...
WARNING: Audio device could not be opened, DAPHNE will run without sound

I'm using Linux Gentoo 2005.1, Creative Audio (ES1371,ES1373) (WM) sound card.

I'm very puzzled because the LaserDisc Mpeg I'm trying to get to run is Badlands... The audio worked the 1st time I tried it in KDE after I parsed the Mpeg... but after that nothing, both in KDE and the command shell... I think it's an issue w/ KDE taking over the sound server. I've tried to disable it in KDE:

Control Center --> Sound & Multimedia --> Sound System: General (tab): Auto-Suspend: (Auto-Suspend (box): Auto-Suspend if idle after (1) second)

jcabrer: Can you describe in more detail how you turned off the ARTS daemon?

Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Regards,
