Great job Matt and to all of the other devs on the Daphne project! Loaded it up and all is well! Thank you for continuing to make our childhood memories a reality. :D

Matt, you freakin' rule! (as do all of the other Daphne devs)

The scoreboard overlay is fantastic! My only complaint was that when none of the lights were lit up, the alignment of the labels looked a little odd, but I quickly discovered that I could modify overlayleds.bmp to my own preference (creating a greyed-out placeholder). Great implementation!

Garry Jordan deserves credit for the scoreboard overlay.

I like the greyed out background!

Garry,

i would like to add my thanks (publicly) for the addition of overlay scoring on DL and SA.

a few questions if i may be so bold.

what are the limitations of the colour palette for the overlay?

is it only two (three)?

white is white and any other colour is grey (and there is clear too, but that's not a colour is it)

is there any chance of seeing red! :o)

some people are never happy.

regards,

GaRy:o)

does this look any better?
more balanced?
red is a little less 'in your face'?

would the red/grey alphas and numerics be possible or would they conflict somewhere else in Daphne? YES they would.

i was looking at the red l.e.d segment displays in Daphne, they look good, they look too big to be used as an overlay? (and don't look too good when resized). we don't want them getting in the way of the gameplay, do we?

before you ask, NO i do not have the skills to add or even test any of what i type about.

just born stupid i guess.

regards,

GaRy:o)

Thanks for the thanks on the overlay scoreboard :)

It's currently just a greyscale palette. Early on I tried red for the LED segments to get a more "authentic" look, but I found it to be hard to see when the background was dark, and in both DL and SA a dark background is pretty much the norm. The white segments (to me, at least) just seemed to work the best all around, so that's the way it ended up... If anyone is so inclined (can't promise I can get around to it), other colors could certainly be added to the palette in a future version.

I think etumor's use of dark grey for the "unlit" segments is a great suggestion, too.

Gary,

If you'd like, I can send you my modified version of the overlayleds.bmp file, although what I did was reasonably simple, and I'm sure you wouldn't have any trouble duplicating it. I used a 50% grey for the unlit sections. I experimented with lighter and darker versions, but 50% seemed to be the best compromise (looks best on the greatest variety of backgrounds).

thanks both for replying.
not to worry if it's too much bother,
i know these changes take much longer that anyone could imagine.
you may have a point about the red being harder to see on darker backgrounds.

as for the greyed segments, thanks for the offer, i managed to modify the overlay bitmap (and there i was thinking i had no skills:o)
i picked green, which looks fine when convirted to greyscale.

keep up the good work.

if you get some spare time perhaps DL2 could be your next little project ;)

GaRy:)

I have a suggestion regarding the score overlay, if this is something you guys really want to change. The anime community has figured out the subtitling thing really well. They use a "light" color with a "dark" outline. That way, when the screen is a "light" color, you can still see the outline of the letters. It makes it easily readable.

If this overlay meant enough to me for me to do it myself, here's how I'd do it: White characters with a red outline. (or possibly red characters with a white outline) Then save each character as it's own image with an alpha channel (32 bit), so it would be transparent around the character. Then code the scoreboard overlay so it displays the appropriate images.

This is just a suggestion. I hate to be someone to request a feature without doing it myself, but it's just not that important to me. But, since you guys seem to be serious about doing this, this is definitely a viable solution that I thought I'd offer. You can take it or leave it. Good luck!

I added etumor's overlay to CVS and added Daphne functionality to allow the user to switch between the original and the alternate. Daphne Loader has also been updated. If anyone comes up with any more nice looking overlays, please pass them my way. :)
