The avatar changes based on how many messages you've posted. You can upload your own avatar (in your profile section) and some people have done this, but it doesn't replace the default one (I don't know of a way to change this).

I'm using phpbb for a board of mine, and I think there isn't :) The avatar for the rank and the one for the user are separate, and the user can't "turn off" the rank avatar.

There IS a way to do it :)
I've seen them do it all the time.
Let's browse through the manual... Maybe I'll find it..

How do I show an image below my username?
There may be two images below a username when viewing posts. The first is an image associated with your rank; generally these take the form of stars or blocks indicating how many posts you have made or your status on the forums. Below this may be a larger image known as an avatar; this is generally unique or personal to each user. It is up to the board administrator to enable avatars and they have a choice over the way in which avatars can be made available. If you are unable to use avatars then this is the decision of the board admin and you should ask them their reasons (we're sure they'll be good!)

Ahh ok so apparently the rank graphic was intended to be small and unobtrusive. So that explains why you can't turn it off :)

Seems to me that what we are seeing now is the rank image.
I don't know if you can turn it on or off.
I bet it's possible :D

I think the avatar is switched off, if you switch it on we can have our own images

Yes, exactly, that's the rank image that we see.
I remember some users here that had two images, one below the other, the first was the rank image, the other one was the avatar. I don't know if Matt disabled the avatar image.

And.. I'm sure enough the user can't turn off the rank image, only administrators can do that :)

Nooo, those images are too well chosen to be removed, in my opinion :D (and the ranks themselves..)

My 2 cents?...
I think we should leave it as is. It makes this Forum unique. And its been this way for so long, I think everyone expects to see their avatar change from time to time, depending on their activity on the board.
Well, that’s my 2 cents anyway...

I agree, Korbin. I've only been around for a little while, but I'm always lookign forward to what my next avatar is going to look like... Though I really do dig the Lupin one (That's Cliff to the rest of you).

I don't think anyone's had any trouble figuring that out considering your 31 posts in 5 days, 18 of them just from today. ;)

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but before you post, try to think about if what you're saying is contributing anything to the archives. When people search for specific questions, It's nice not to have a lot of unrelated topics to wade through.

Your enthusiasm, however, is unprecedented. :)
