I know phpbb is a pain in the butt, but now that ie7 basically blocks the page until you manually enter it'd be nice to have a "valid security certificate" so m$ wouldn't complain.

Are you volunteering to pay for the valid cert?

Well it depends on how much it is....

I'm certainly willing to pay my fair share. :)

Or of course another solution might be to switch the forums over to something that's free... We use smf (I think byoac does as well) and it works quite nicely.

Yet another solution would be to switch to a more user friendly browser ala firefox :)

And perhaps the best solution...turn off SSL.

Why do we need encryption to read/post on a public message board? It's silly.

It's the SSL cert that costs money, not phpBB.

Well if you can convince 95% of the pc public to switch to something other than ie then sure, but that isn't going to happen. I'm not brining this up to nit pick btw... the thing is in ie when you come to the site you get a big "halt" page that looks like the site might have a virus or something. New visitors to the forums, especially people that aren't very computer literate might get thrown off by this. It might explain why some people post their questions to mameworld or byoac first.

Matt if that's the case then why in the blue moon are you running ssl on a public forum?

It's good that IE pops up a big warning box, because I am using a self-signed certificate.

I don't doubt that some users are thrown off by this. In fact, I am surprised that no one has really complained about this before.

I am running SSL because I believe that it's better to have a self-signed SSL certificate than to send passwords in cleartext over the internet.

I'd love to have a valid cert but last I checked they were fairly expensive and this message board doesn't really benefit me very much anyway, so I don't see it is a very worthwhile investment. If other people want to organize the funds necessary to get the SSL cert, I would certainly implement one.

Can't you just turn off the certificate handling in phpbb admin ? I have used phpBB before and I've never had a browser asking me for a certificate.
