Hi, I just tried Dave Hallocks Space Ace Enhancement ROMS, and the screen goes blank just after Dexter says "requesting permission to land" (i.e. between level 2 and level 3). If I use the normal roms, the game works fine.

I'm using MPEG2/Ogg files converted from the DVD.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have the same problem, but the game will hang at different places.

I think it's either the DVD or the rip. SAE references footage that isn't included in every version of SA?

Works fine for me, with a LD rip and the DVD footage (old and new)

What version of Daphne are you using ?

I'm using Daphne v0.99.7. I have to confess, I don't know where the ROMs came from... I used a different version of Daphne at first, one that automatically downloaded missing content. I'll try downloading the enhanced ROM manually and see if that changes anything.

Mine always hangs at exactly the same point.. so maybe as Huggybaby says I'm just missing the needed frames. Maybe I should re-rip the DVD?

Yes, the latest version of dvd2daphne is supposed to work better with SAE.

I just did some more testing, and it only crashes if I *don't* select which space pad to land on. I believe in SAE, Dave changed it so that if you don't select a landing pad, you die (unlike the original, where it defaulted to Borf's pad). I guess I'm missing the footage.

Having played it through a few times, I think (reluctantly) I have to say I prefer the original ROMs over SAE. I love the fact that SAE plays the "get me our of heeeere" sequence even on captain and ace levels, and that the timing of the moves remains the same regardless of skill level. But I don't like that he has changed which moves work and when, for example if you don't energise on level 1 and don't select a direction, you die... but there's no visual cues that this is needed, to me it's illogical.

I wish he'd release one with arcade-faithful moves, but his other changes intact :-)

Crashes even in the "wasteland" if you make a mistake in some scenes...what a shame

Well, I re-ripped the DVD using the latest tools and now it works perfectly - no more crashes. Now the biggest eyebrow raiser is how *bad* some of the animation is towards the end of the game (during the bike scene in particular). Perhaps Bluth & Co were a little rushed...?

I used dvd2daph version 3. You can find more information about it here. You'll need the Space Ace DVD loaded into your DVD drive. It creates the necessary MPEG & OGG files for Daphne - no more crashes with Space Ace Enhanced :D

Dude, are you serious? LOL

There is a BRIGHT yellow flash that occurs at the first energize opportunity of the game. So if you don't want to energize, you'll have to follow it. This is the animators' design, which the original ROMs for all 3 Bluth games commonly disregarded.

The SAE readme file explains:
At every opportunity to energize during the game, (except during the final scene), a flash indicates an alternate route that may be taken instead of energizing. If you choose not to energize and play as Dexter, you must move the joystick in this alternate direction. You cannot simply do nothing, as the original program often allows. If you neither energize nor move anywhere, you will lose a life (except during the final scene).

And... it's logical. What's illogical is the way you used the term "arcade-faithful" here. My ROM work has always been about repairing the damage done by the arcade programmers, so no, I'll not be faithful to them.

I'm glad you liked some aspects of SAE. Here's hoping that you'll find all of the flashes that you've been missing...
